West Jordan MMA fighter signs contract after ESPN profile

Rad Martinez and his father, Richard

Rad Martinez (left) stretches and exercises his dad, Richard, during therapy at his home in Midvale in 2009. Richard suffered severe brain damage after an automobile accident in 1991 when Rad was 11 years old. (Michael Brandy, Deseret News).

“When I say I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it. That’s the kind of person I am. I made a promise. I meant it. I’m going to keep it.” — Rad Martinez

If you don’t know about Rad Martinez. It’s time you found out. He’s one of the hardest working guys in Utah sports, and he just signed a multiyear, multifight deal with Bellator Fighting Championships.

Deseret News sports writer Amy Donaldson wrote about him last year on how he cares for his brain-damaged father, Richard.

The West Jordan fighter is 9-2 and coming off a loss, but after his story was told on ESPN’s Outside the Lines last Sunday, Bellator quickly moved to sign Martinez. His first fight is planned for sometime in Bellator’s fall season, which begins in Atlantic City, N.J. on Sept. 10.

I urge you to check out the inspiring video and story by ESPN’s Josh Gross.
