Big weekend for Utah’s rugby community

What a weekend for rugby.

Santa Barbara, Calif.; Stanford, Calif.; Victoria, British Columbia; and Durban, South Africa; are all places where Utahns will be representing the United States in rugby.

First off is the Victoria International Sevens tournament Saturday where under-18 round-robin action gets underway at 10:30 a.m. MT. The Utah Cannibals and Team USA (with Lowland High School Football Club’s Stratton Brown) face off at 2 p.m.

Later Saturday, at Stanford University, the USA All-American Touring team goes for the three-game sweep of New Zealand Universities at 2 p.m. MT. BYU’s Ray Forrester, Mark Bonham and Mike Su’a played in the previous two victories.

On Sunday, it’s the women’s turn as United State’s under-20 team takes on England at 5 p.m. BYU stars Mckinsey Lewis and Monica Jackson as well as Orem’s Akalaini Baravilala are listed on the team’s roster. The Americans beat South Africa 25-3 on Thursday in four-nation round-robin tournament, which runs through July 23 in Santa Barbara.

Lowland High School Football Club’s Fa’aitua Laei is training with the Boy’s High School All-Americans Touring Squad in South Africa. His team plays George Campbell Tech College on Tuesday.
