It’s playoff time for the Ogden Mustangs.
While the odds are against Ogden winning the three-game series with the Idaho Jr. Steelheads (42-2-2) in McCall, Idaho, this weekend, just getting into the Western States Hockey League playoffs is an accomplishment.
Ogden (13-29-3) started off the season with just two wins in their first 24 games of the season.
“We had a tough start, and then we went to Vegas and got a couple of wins there,” said former Viewmont Viking standout Kody Rodriguez about a league holiday tournament where Ogden went 2-2. “I think that’s what really got us going. After that we started to roll a little bit and get some wins.”
Since that tournament the first-year club is 7-10 — all the wins coming from inside the state of Utah.
“Our home games, we have a lot of friends and family come out and watch,” Rodriguez said.
While Idaho has lost just two games all season, the Mustangs nearly beat them on at the Ice Sheet. The Steelheads scored two goals in the final minute — including the last coming on the last second to force overtime, which they won 5-4.
Game 1 is tonight at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. If Game 3 is necessary, it will be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
