LARAMIE, Wyo — The BYU Cougars crushed the University of Wyoming Cowboys today by the score of 85-10 to move solely into the lead of the Western Conference with four extra-point wins.
The Cougars ran in 13 total tries and converted on 11 of them. BYU freshman fullback Tua Laei and sophomore center Paul Lasike each tallied a hat-trick of tries while six other Cougars got in on the scoring action.
The Cougars started well with Laei dotting down in the 8th minute after a successful set-piece move from a BYU lineout inside the Wyoming half.
Laei scored his two other tries later in the game while Lasike scored two of his tries in the first half before taking over flyhalf duties in the second for normal BYU pivot-man Dylan Lubbe.
The Cowboys got on the board after weathering a 52-point BYU barrage in the 50th minute as a Wyoming prop muscled past the BYU defense for the short-range try.
Wyoming scored again in the 69th minute.
With the win BYU now holds to a strong 4-0 lead in the Western Conference ahead of rivals the University of Utah (2-0), the Air Force Academy (2-1) and Colorado University (2-2).
Tallying two wins against conference foes by an aggregate margin of victory of 182-17, BYU head coach David Smyth gave positive feedback about his team’s performance and today and on the overall weekend.
“Our backs are doing well overall now that (scrumhalf Shaun) Davies is starting to get his fitness back,” Smyth said. “And we’re hitting space well. I’m really happy with the boys’ effort. They’ve all worked hard on this trip. Now we get a few days of rest, and we finish the rest of the season at home, which will be great.”
The Cougars final three regular season games will be on South Field against Western Conference foes Arizona, Utah and Colorado.
The first of the final three-game home stand starts with BYU hosting the University of Arizona this Friday night.
The Wildcats are 1-2 in conference play having lost today to the University of Utah in Tucson by the score of 68-15.
BYU beat the Wildcats 70-12 in Tucson last year in uncharacteristic wet and rainy conditions.
Kick-off between the Cougars and Wildcats is set for 6.30 p.m. on Friday.
