SALT LAKE CITY — The 2012 Intermountain Cricket League season opened Sunday with the Utah Lions topping rival Salt Lake County Sabrecats 205-146.
“The Lions and the Sabrecats have had an intense rivalry the past season and the opener was destined to be a cracker of a game,” said Lions player Omer Aslam Malik.
Winning the toss, the Sabercat captain Nasir Khan invited the Lions to bat first. Utah amassed a hefty 205 in their allotted 25 overs. The Lions had a great opening partnership of 65 runs between Hamza Jamshed (58) and Harris Zia (18). The middle order consistency of Malik (16) , Alam (31) , Rohit (32) and Umair (20) also had strong outings.
Hamza Jamshed, a 15-year old new recruit from Orem High School, had a match-high 58 run innings. His innings included four sixes and two fours.
Needing a big total to win, the Sabrecats lost their openers early before a brief middle order partnership was forming. The new ball spell of Umar Javed and Omar Rehman dazzled the opponents — as both the openers Jagadev and Rahid departed early.
The Lions defense was led by slow bowler Ahsan and Malik, who served as wicketkeeper. He stumped a career-high three players.
The Sabrecats travel to play the Las Vegas Express in a 30-over match on Saturday and a 20-over match Sunday. Here is their traveling XI: Nasir, Abhishek, Arun, Atif, Azhar, Jagdev, Josh Hawley, Kamran, Max, Rahid, Saliman.
“This trip has been a long time coming, and I know that we are all excited to get a good weekend of cricket under our belts,” said Hawley on the Sabrecats website.
