Salt Lake County Sabrecats 148,
Utah Lions 147
SALT LAKE CITY — The Sabrecats got their first victory of the season on the 11th Avenue Park’s new turf on Sunday.
“The newly laid carpet added beauty to the ground, as expected it provided help to both the bowlers and batsmen,” said Sabrecats captain Nasir Khan, adding that he was glad that the Utah Lions won the toss and elected to bat first because of the unknowns of how the new pitch would play.
The match started after the teams had a moment of silence for the scores of Pakistani soldiers who lost their lives in a avalanche Saturday.
The ‘Cats’ Atif Ali started the innings as the bowler, quickly knocking out Harris Zia in his second over.
“His thunderous and wicked speed made the opponents batsmen uncomfortable,” Khan said.
After the first bowling change Saeed Ahmed and Arun Salimath continued to bowl well.
Salimath took three wickets in five overs and only gave up 18 runs. Zaki Murtaza led the Lions with 22 runs; Ahsan Javed a lot hit well.
The batting highlights by Sabercats came from new addition and opening batsman Shazad Ahmed, who scored a match-high 67 runs not out; Kamran Kahn added 36 runs. The Lions’ Omer Malik picked up two wickets.
Sabercats will be visiting Layton Smashers on Sunday.
“The entire team is awaiting for this match, and equally excited to see cricket is starting to flourish here in the Intermountain states,” Khan said.
