Griffins women’s team wins conference title; men fall to BYU

SALT LAKE CITY — For the second straight year the Westminster College women’s lacrosse team is champions of the Rocky Mountain Women’s Lacrosse League.

The Griffins defeated Utah Valley 21-5 in the semifinals and Utah 16-11 in the title game.

The Griffins are now 16-5 on the year and ranked No. 5 in the current WCLA Top 25 Poll. They defend the 2011 RMWLL title they won for the second conference championship in team history.
With the win, Westminster has earned an automatic berth into next month’s WCLA Division 2 National Championships. The event will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., from May 9-12. Westminster finished fourth at last year’s tournament.

Meanwhile, the Griffins’ men’s team dropped a 20-12 decision at BYU in thier final regular season game.

Third-ranked Westminster ends the regular season at 13-3 overall. BYU, ranked No. 2 in the latest MCLA D1 Poll, is now 14-2 on the season and is a perfect 3-0 all-time against the Griffins.

Westminster will next be in action on May 4 in the RMLC Division 2 Conference Tournament. The event will be played at Walker Field in Grand Junction, Colo., and the Griffins have a bye into the semifinals by virtue of winning the West Division title.
