Utah Rugby Brothers face coach’s old team in first round of DI club playoffs

PARK CITY — The Utah Rugby Brothers start their playoff campaign this Saturday when they host Santa Monica here.

The kick off for the Pacific Coast Men’s DI Club playoff game is slated for 11:30 a.m. at City Park in Park City.

The Brothers were formed just a few months ago after Rugby Super League team Utah Warriors folded.

The club compiled a 3-2 record, falling to Super League team Denver 26-25 and DI defending champ Glendale (Colo.) Raptors 51-24 after a tight first half where the Brothers trailed by just three, 22-19.

URB qualified for the playoffs by beating instate rival Provo Steelers three times, including a 41-10 win last weekend.

“We admit we aren’t as battled-hardened as we would like, but it has been a tremendous effort from everyone involved,” Brothers coach Tim Lewis.

Lewis, a native of Arkansas, has experience coaching clubs in the Untied States — including Santa Monica in 2010 — as well as teams in Argentina and New Zealand.

“We are really looking forward to the playoff,” he said, “but more importantly growing all of rugby in Utah.”

The winner of the game qualifies for the quarterfinals in Chula Vista, Calif. You can find the entire D1 bracket here.
