LAYTON — The long awaited first-ever game between the Layton Bashers and Utah Lions ended with a close 133-132 victory for the green-clad Lions.
Bashers won the toss and elected to bat first. Lions’ opening bowlers, Umar Javed, Omar Rehman and Hashim Hussnain made the ball talk and dismissed the top four batsmen very cheaply. At one time it was looking like Bashers would be all out under 75. However, Bashers’ Tejas (27) and Varun (39) fought back and played really good shots. Lions’ spinners, Aslam Cheema and Harris Zia answered back and bagged two wickets each and booked Bashers for 132.
Lions’ opening batsmen, Zaki Murtaza (26) and Harris Zia (7) started well but lost the first wicket to Rohit Pathak’s pace. Lions’ Zaki Murtaza (26) and Aslam Cheema (29) kept the scoreboard ticking. Bashers’ Kartik responded and took two quick wickets and gave some hope. Even though Bashers’ bowlers bowled well but they couldn’t get a grip on extras. Finally, Lions’ Umar Javed (16) and Bilal Khan (11) took the responsibility and brought Lions home with a win by 5 wickets.
Zaki Murtaza, playing his last game for Lions, received a standing ovation from the players and fans.
“Just like Omer Malik, we lost another key player, Zaki Murtaza,” said Lions captain, Omar Alam. “He completed his PhD and will be moving to California and eventually will be heading back to Pakistan. We are happy for him and wish him best of luck in his future endeavors.”
