Utah Ultimate teams battle for high school title this weekend

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Ultimate Disc Association will be hosting the Utah State High School Ultimate Championship tournament next weekend, bringing together 14 ultimate Frisbee teams from around the state for two days of play at Timberline Middle School in Alpine.

Pool play begins 4 p.m. Friday with bracket play at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Lone Peak (16-0), the defending 2011 champions, is favored to repeat and become the first team to win back-to-back title). Other contenders include 2011 runners-up Alta and Sky View. Orem, Skyline, Layton, Brighton, Park City, Judge Memorial, Waterford, and City Academy and Lone Peak and Skyline JV teams round out the tournament.

These teams comprise the largest field (nearly double last year’s count) to compete in this tournament. Led by strong growth in the Utah Valley, more schools are beginning to organize teams.

Two weekends after the State High School Championships, UUDA will be hosting the USA Ultimate Western Championships June 2-3 in Orem. Nine boys’ teams and six girls’ teams from six western states will compete for the title, including Utah’s Brighton High School.
