DALLAS — United Rugby Club’s Calvin Whiting was among the 32 The USA Rugby High School All-Americans who assembled in Dallas this week before leaving on a challenging five-game, 20-day tour of three South American Countries.
The squad will begin their test matches in Vina del Mar and Santiago, Chile, continuing on to Montevideo, Uruguay, and finishing their tour in Buenos Aires.
Whiting, who will play fly half for the HSAAs, is one of only six sophomores on the team. The rest of the squad is made up of 13 seniors and 13 juniors and three overseas Americans from England. Twelve players competed for the HSAA Junior Varsity U17s in England last April, while six played in the England Schools National Sevens at Rosslyn Park.
Head coach Salty Thompson said he is looking forward to the experience this will bring the young squad.
“We’re playing five internationals in foreign countries to really take them out of their comfort zones, expose them to high level of play, and in an environment that only an international can bring,” Thompson said.
The HSAA staff recruited the players at regional all-star events, camps and tournaments.
“We’re building for the present and the future with our selections of senior, juniors and sophomores,” Thompson said. “We want to keep filtering significant groups to the U20s and hopefully create future Eagles. It’s a relatively young squad.”
