The first of 13 regional tournaments to qualify teams for the college sevens championship took place on Sep. 2. In the Mid America Conference playoffs, Davenport became the first qualifier as the Panthers went 5-0, defeating Bowling Green 36-12 in the finals.
The Utes will play in the Pac-12 sevens qualifier held at UCLA in California on Nov. 3-4. All the Pac-12 sides will participate in that qualifier.
BYU is playing in the Rocky Mountain sevens qualifier on Oct. 20 in Glendale, Colo. The Collegiate USA Rugby Sevens National Championships will be held Nov. 31-Dec. 1 at a site to be determined.
Utah was ranked fourth and labeled “always dangerous” in Rugby Mag’s preseason sevens ranking. Ranked above the Utes were No. 3 California, second-ranked Life University, and top-ranked Kutztown. Arkansas State was fifth, Dartmouth sixth, Davenport seventh followed by St. Mary’s and Central Washington. BYU was ranked 11th.
