Women’s rugby: Monica Jackson on national team camp roster; Tom Waqa named USOC volunteer coach of the year

Monica Jackson of the Cougar Women’s Rugby club is one of 43 players selected for USA Rugby women’s national team four-day selection camp for team’s European tour.

Head coach Peter Steinberg and his staff narrowed down its selections to reveal the player pool to be finalized for the November contests.

“The focus of this camp is quite different,” said Steinberg. “Where the June camp was about development and providing high-level competition, the September camp is about selecting the squad that will face Italy and France in November.”

Only 30 of the athletes will be selected for the touring squad.

The Eagles are slatted to play Italy Nov. 18, followed by two matches against France, Nov. 21 and 24.

Also, Womens Cougar head coach Tom Waqa was recently named Volunteer Coach of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee.

From the press release:

Now in his sixth season as the head coach of Brigham Young University’s women’s rugby team, Waqa has played a key role in molding an unsponsored and formerly unrecognized team into a nationally ranked formidable force. The Fiji native has helped produce All-American nominees in each of his seven seasons, highlighted by 2011 honorees Kristi Jackson, Monica Jackson and Rebekah Siebach, who propelled the Cougars to the Final Four. He also helps identify young talent to compete in the Under-20 National All-Star Championships, which routinely produce scouting opportunities for U.S. national teams. In addition to coaching at BYU, Waqa also volunteers as the Humless men’s rugby coach.
