Three players with Utah ties competing for USA Rugby’s men’s and women’s sevens teams

It’s time for some international sevens.

Provo native and former Utah Warriors star Maka Unufe and Southern Utah grad and former Provo Steelers and Utah Warriors player Mike Palefau will suit for the men’s USA Rugby team in the opening round of the Sevens World Series in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

On the women’s side Rebekah Siebach, of the Womens Cougars Rugby club, has been named to the women’s seven squad that will be touring China later this month

This is a big year for women’s rugby as the IRB recently announced a Women’s Sevens World Series will take place for the first time ever. The five-city series will take place in Dubai (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), Houston (Feb. 1-2), Guangzhou, China, (March 30-31), Amsterdam (May 17-18) and Moscow (June 28-30).

The men’s series includes nine total tournaments and 15 core teams, culminating with the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow.

“The guys have been working hard, are aware of the long road ahead, and are excited to play,” said Magleby.  “We are looking forward to building on where we left off at the qualifiers.”
