High school rugby: 3 Utah teams place in top 5 rankings after nationals

Snow Canyon (green) and Herriman received top 5 rankings from RugbyMag.com.

Thanks to two impressive runs through their respective national invitational rugby tournaments, United and Herriman boys rugby teams have moved into rarefied air.

Ranked No. 6 going into the national club tournament, United knocked off the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 1 schools on their way to their second national title. RugbyMag.com awarded them a No. 1 ranking.

Meanwhile, Herriman High Rugby Club — which smashed United 30-0 in the Utah Division 1 semifinals — moved up from No. 5 to No. 2 in RugbyMag.com’s boys’ high school single-school national rankings thanks to a narrow loss to eventually national invitational champ Sacramento Jesuit.

Herriman’s success also moved Snow Canyon High up from No. 10 to No. 5 thanks to handing Herriman its only loss to a Utah high school team in two years. Only California and Utah have two teams ranked in the top 10.
