Intermountain Cricket League Week 6: Lions hold off Sabrecats for first win of season

LIONS 223, SABRECATS 203: At Salt Lake City on June 16, Sabrecats took on Utah Lions for the second time this season. Sabrecats captain, Nasir Khan, won the toss and put Utah Lions into bat. Lions openers Omar Alam and Aslam Cheema started off cautiously while Sabrecats fast bowlers Ishaq Afridi and Atif Ali kept good line and length. However, under pressure Alam played captain’s innings of 62 supported by Cheema’s 54, which boosted Lions with the opening partnership of 137/0 in 13 overs. After the drinks break Nasir brought in Arun Salimath who grabbed two quick wickets of both the set batsmen and brought Sabrecats right back into the game. However, Harris Zia’s 27 in 12 balls and some late hitting by Ali Shahzad and Umar Javed lifted Lions to a total of 223 in 24.3 overs. Sabrecats bowling was topped by Arun with four wickets and Ishaq with three.

Sabrecats openers Jagdev Singh and the dependable Shahzad Ahmad started under pressure chasing a huge target. Lions’ new-ball bowling by Javed and Usman Shahzad was very impressive as Sabrecats openers struggled to make quick runs. After six overs, Sabrecats became under pressure with two run outs by Lions wicketkeeper Omer Malik dismissing Jagdev and Saeed. Then Rahid Karim came out to bat. Both Rahid and Shahzad played sensibly and kept ticking the scoreboard with 10 runs an over and a partnership of 100 runs. However, with a direct hit by Lions’ Asad Zia ran out Shahzad on 54 and swung the tide of the match in Lions favor. The run out was followed by Usman dismissing Rahid on 48. The Sabrecats’ last hope Ishaq was dismissed by Raza Hassan when the ball fell just inside the boundary into the safe hands of Ali. Wickets kept falling in regular intervals and Lions managed to win by 21 runs. Rest of the Sabrecats batting included Arun with 30 runs and Bilal with 20. Lions’ Malik was involved in five dismissals (four run outs and a stumping). Lions’ bowlers Hamza, Usman, Harris and Raza bagged a wicket each.
