Intermountain Cricket League Week 9: Lions win third straight, move into second place

LIONS 133, BEEHIVE 132 (Lions win by 5 wickets): At Salt Lake City, Beehive took on Utah Lions for the second time this season. Tariq, Beehive captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. Lions new bowler Usman Shahzad got the first break through on the second delivery of the match as the batsman nicked into the safe hands of wicket keeper Asad Zia.

Lions Umar Javed got the second break through with a clean bowled putting Beehive under pressure for 11 runs in just 5 overs. However, young Sameed and the Beehive’s dependable batsman Adil put on a partnership of 30 runs until Lions Harris Zia broke the partnership with a caught and bowled of Sameed scoring 12.

Wickets continued to fall as Lions Hasan Zaidi ran out Tariq by a distance. The next batsman Farasat along with Adil took quick singles and recovered their team with a 30-run partnership. The Lions’ Usman broke the crucial partnership and dismissed Farasat on 26, Adil scored 21, and Shahid Rana blasted a quick 12 to give Lions a target of 132 runs.

Lions Usman almost claimed a five-wicket haul but ended up with his personal best of four wickets. Lions spinners Aslam Cheema and Ali Shahzad also claimed a wicket each.

Lions regular openers Cheema and Omar Alam carried their form from previous outings and started confidently. Beehive new ball bowlers Fahad Rana and Adil bowled with good line and length.

However, the pair kept the scoreboard ticking and scored a third consecutive 50-plus opening partnership for Lions.

Beehive Shahid came in to attack after 7 overs and bowled with some serious pace. He got the important breakthrough by dismissing Cheema for 27.

The next Lions batsman Harris came in to bat and started his innings with a huge straight six. It was one of the longest sixes of this season. However, he didn’t last very long and was dismissed at 10 as he nicked the ball into the hands of Farasat. The next Lions batsman Asad put on a quick 17 with a six and a four but he too was dismissed by a similar delivery of Shahid. Shahid bowled his personal best by claiming four wickets but it wasn’t enough to bring his team victory. Lions won the match by chasing 133 in 15.4 overs with a loss of 5 wickets. Alam remained not out at 50 as the remaining batsmen Zaidi and Hamza both scored 10.
