MOAB — More than 400 riders are expected here to race on Saturday in the Utah High School Cycling League’s fifth and final race of its second season.
The number of mountain bikers has been fairly consistent throughout the season, which started in Corner Canyon in September. They have raced along the Wasatch Front and Back and now it’s time to conquer the Utah mountain biking’s Mecca: Moab.
In the girls varsity race, Haley Batten will be trying to sweep the series. The Park City freshman has dominated throughout the fall.
On the boys’ side, first-season rivals Justin Griffin (Olympus/Cottonwood/Hillcrest) and Zach Peterson (South Davis) are only separated by 29 points in this season. Griffin has won three races while Peterson has the other victory.
Saturday’s race near Arches National Park at the Brand Trails will go off in three waves, starting at 10 a.m. and running into the afternoon.
